When David Herron takes his own life, he leaves behind a devastated family and a ripple effect of pain and guilt. His widow, Jules, is filled with bitterness and anger, blaming David for abandoning her and their daughter, Rennie. Rennie, meanwhile, is struggling to cope with her father's death, believing that she is to blame. Former police detective Denise is also haunted by David's death. She believes that she could have prevented it if she had handled the case differently. She now feels responsible for Rennie's pain and is determined to help her. Daniel, the young man who helped create the circumstances that led to David's suicide, is also struggling with guilt. He is punishing himself by living a transient life, never staying in one place long enough to make real connections. All of these characters are trying to find a way to move on from the past and build a brighter future. But they all have their own demons to face.
