Joel is learning about protecting the environment from his teacher and aunt. He and his grandfather often encounter litter on their walks, and they talk about how to stop littering. In their adventures, they see a big blue garbage bag cutting off a town's water supply, a dog suffering from eating a pizza takeout bag, an eagle nearly dying from plastic drink rings, and a Minkie whale tangled in a fishing net. They also help the Puffin and Petrel Patrol rescue young puffin seabirds. The book includes activity pages for children to express ways they can help improve the environment.
