Major David Keller, a decorated war veteran, returns home after losing his legs in a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan. He is angry, grieving, and suicidal. He plans to use a gun he brought home to end his life, but before he can do so, he is forced to confront the people and places of his past. His high school sweetheart, Maggie McCall, has never left Onekama, Michigan. She is determined to help David heal, but he pushes her away. His family and friends are also there for him, but he is too lost in his own pain to see their love. As David struggles to find his way back to life, a dark secret from his past threatens to destroy him. If he is to find peace, he must face his demons and learn to forgive himself.
